The Dawn of the World

Let’s start this in Chapter 1000 with Yamato giving Oden’s journal to Momonosuke. In this chapter, we were introduced on how Yamato found Oden’s journal near the river and how fate made way for Momonosuke to meet Luffy and eventually bringing him to Wano.

Prior to this in Chapter 996, Yamato told Momonosuke that he must guide this world to the “Dawn” and on the next chapter telling Momonosuke that his life is top priority.

After Toki sent Momonosuke to the future, she gave this prophecy

“You are the moon, unaware of the dawn. May your purpose be fulfilled. And cast 9 shadows on the night woven of 20 years, and you shall know the brilliance of the dawn.”

The 6 clans of Wano excluding Kurozumi clan has moon reference to their names. The symbol of the rebellion is a crescent moon in their ankle. Even Toki herself had the moon symbol on her clothes when she met Oden. Thus, the moon unaware of the Dawn is Momonosuke’s purpose to guide the world to the Dawn.

My Name is Momonosuke

Momonosuke first apppeared in chapter 685 entitled “My Name is Momonosuke”. In this chapter, he met Luffy in a garbage dump in his Dragon form. Momonosuke then revealed his past on how he arrived in his current location and how he accidentally ate a failed devil fruit. He then travelled with the Strawhats from Punk Hazard to Dressrosa then to Zou and finally arriving in Wano.

When Momonosuke was born, the Whitebeard pirates suggested names for his child based on the ingredients of Oden stew. However, Oden gave him a name that would mean invincible.

After Oden’s execution, Kaido went to Kuri castle to kill the remaining Kozuki clan members. There, he met Momonosuke and asked for his name while holding him by the neck dangling on top of the castle. However, because Momo was too afraid he might fall, he did not answer Kaido’s question.

During the raid in Onigashima, Kanjuro captured Momonosuke and presented him to Kaido and Orochi. Orochi thought of a brilliant plan to execute Momonosuke, the leader of the rebellion. He was presented to the beast pirates and samurais in the banquet hall while chained in a cross. Kaido then asked him again for his name and people suggested to change his name to save his life. But Momonosuke showed his courage and shouted his name while remembering his parents. He also claimed he will become the shogun of Wano.

Momonosuke’s Devil Fruit

Momonosuke’s devil fruit was introduced way back in chapter 685 as a failed experiment of Vegapunk. The artificial devil fruit is based on a dragon devil fruit. However, prior to this, two dragons have been shown in Punk Hazard which is totally different from the form of Momonosuke.

Momonosuke’s dragon closely resemble that of Kaido’s except for the color and the two additional horns. The power of flaming clouds to fly was even introduced as early as the same chapter he was introduced.

In Oden’s flashback, he held Momonosuke up high while descending from sky island with the octoballoon. Momonosuke seems to have enjoyed this.

However, when Luffy asked Momonosuke to fly to Dressrosa, he declined saying he was afraid of heights. Momonosuke’s fear of heights have originated from Kaido recalling the time Kaido asked for his name. He has since repeated this fear on several occassions including the time Kanjuro flew with the captured Momonosuke.

I believe Momonosuke will be able to fully utilize his devil fruit ability once he conquers his fear. A possible trigger would be his memory with Oden carrying him up high instead of Kaido.

Momonosuke Training

At a very young age, Oden has taught Momonosuke on how to weild a sword. Unlike Oden who was gifted with combat ability, Momonosuke seems to need ample training to be able to use a sword properly.

In Momo’s childhood, Oden trained him on how to use a sword. Notice how Oda specifies to think of a person like a fish cake when slicing.

And in chapter 999, we learn that Kaido is the bearer of the Legendary Model of the Fish Fish Fruit. This is a subtle hint that Momonosuke may cut Kaido in the future.

Momonosuke was seen several times training alone and with Zoro.

In his attempt to free himself up, Momonosuke tried to use a dagger to free himself and cut Kanjuro’s palm. Kanjuro relayed to the Scabbards at the back entrance of Onigashima what happened when he tried to escape. He even thinks the reason why Momo still survives is because he is carrying Oden’s blood.

Adult Momonosuke

Shinobu has always been with Momonosuke ever since the return of Momonosuke and arrival of the Strawhats in Wano. When Kaido attacked Kuri Castle with his Boro Breath, Shinobu used her ripe ripe fruit, to save them. Momonosuke may have found an idea how to defeat Kaido using Shinobu’s ability to turn him into an adult which is why he continued training despite his young age.

In their attempt to escape Kaido in Onigashima, Shinobu used her powers again to decay the rocks and causing them to fall near Tokage port.

Age and Time related Devil Fruits

It is unclear when Shinobu obtained her Juku Juku no mi Devil fruit (Ripe Ripe Fruit) which she calls as Jutsu and has never used it on other human. When she used her Jutsu, even though the strawhats were standing on the ground that Shinobu aged.

This is in contrast to Jewelry Bonney when she used it to change the marines but eventually can revert back to their original age. The ripe ripe fruit will make a person ripe of age but cannot revert.

Toki’s devil fruit can somehow be attached to ageing as she has been jumping through time for 800 years. When she sent Momo and the scabbards forward in time to 20 years, they retained their age as if no time passed.

Momonosuke vs Kaido
Dragon vs Dragon

It is inevitable that Momonosuke’s training will eventually lead him to fight Kaido. In Oden’s Flashback, he tells Momonosuke that he must imagine swordfight as like cutting a Fish cake to which’ Kaido’s Fruit is the Uo Uo no Mi (Fish Fish Devil Fruit).

It is also revealed that Momo’s devil fruit was a product of Dr Vegapunk’s experiment with Kaido’s Lineage factor (DNA) in punk hazard.

At this time, Momonosuke must first regain Ame no Habakiri which is currently in the possession of Tenguyama Hitetsu. In chapter 1016, Tenguyama was seen with Otoko in the Flower Capital and Onigashima was also heading to the Flower Capital. There is no evidence yet that Momo knows how to use Nitoryu or 2-sword style to also weild Enma but there is a possibility that Enma will return to Hiyori and Zoro getting Shisui back.

There is also a huge possibility that Zoro is a descendant of Ryuma Shimotsuki and Zoro is the rightful heir to Shishui, the same with Momo and Hiyori as the inheritor of Oden’s swords.

Momonosuke’s Conqueror’s Haki and Armament Haki

In Chapter 886, Silver’s Rayleigh told Luffy that Haki blooms in extreme situation. Oden was a Color of Conqueror (Haoshoku Haki) user and in Chapter 1010, Luffy and Zoro were both seen to have used the advanced Conqueror’s Haki and if Momo were to fight on par with Kaido, he would also eventually unlock his conqueror’s Haki.

Momonosuke vs Orochi

In Chapter 1020, Kaido tells Yamato that she needs to stop becoming Oden and become Wano’s Shogun. Kaido may not be aware that Orochi is alive. For the most part of Wano, Orochi’s powers have not been revealed and his battle capabilities and Momonosuke may soon be facing Orochi to become the rightful heir of the Shogunate.

Momonosuke’s Future in One Piece

During his execution, Oden ordered his retainers to Open Wano’s border before the certain figure returns. He also told Toki to use her power and look 20 years to the future. Likewise, Lady Toki’s prophecy to Wano possibly refers to Momonosuke as the Moon (Tsuki) unaware of the Dawn (Will of D or D Clan).

In Chapter 984, Marco tells the Big Mom Pirates that the next time they return to Wano that times may have moved on from before. And in chapter 1012, Momonosuke also finally realized his role after reading Oden’s Journal. Momo’s destiny is to become the Shogun of Wano and become the pillar for Luffy to become the Pirate King. He may as well be one of the Ancient Weapon Uranus.
